Meta Withdraws Instagram AI Feature Following Privacy Backlash

Meta has discontinued a feature on Instagram that allowed users to generate images by referencing public accounts. The tool, part of the new Muse Image model, faced immediate criticism from the Creative Artists Agency and the performers' union SAG-AFTRA. Critics expressed concerns regarding privacy, the automatic opt-in nature of the feature, and the potential for unauthorized use of personal likenesses. Following the backlash, which included viral social media campaigns, Meta removed the @-mention functionality from Instagram on July 10, just three days after its launch.

While the specific Instagram integration was pulled, the Muse Image technology remains accessible through the Meta AI app and WhatsApp. The incident has prompted broader discussions regarding the ethics of artificial intelligence. Bryce Allison, chief technology officer at the American Bible Society, noted that while AI offers significant potential for global ministry, such as overcoming language barriers to increase Bible accessibility, its development requires careful consideration of human dignity and consent.
