Kansas Senate Candidate Adam Hamilton Faces Scrutiny Over Virgin Birth Comments
Adam Hamilton, a United Methodist pastor and Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Kansas, is facing criticism following the circulation of a 2024 podcast episode in which he discussed the virgin birth of Jesus. In the recording, Hamilton stated that while he personally believes in the virgin birth, he does not consider it a mandatory requirement for Christian salvation.
Hamilton argued that the biblical accounts of the virgin birth are primarily theological rather than biological in nature. He noted that the doctrine is mentioned only in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and suggested that Jesus’ primary call to his disciples was to follow him, rather than to adhere to specific beliefs regarding his conception. He acknowledged that the virgin birth became a central tenet during the rise of Christian fundamentalism.
Critics, including the publication Protestia, have challenged these remarks, arguing that questioning the virgin birth amounts to dismissing biblical authority. The virgin birth remains a foundational element of the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds, which are widely recited across many Christian denominations.
