Christians Urged to Address Homelessness Through Housing Policy Advocacy
Recent data highlights a significant rise in homelessness across the United States, with national Point-in-Time counts increasing by 28 percent between 2022 and 2025 to reach 745,652 individuals. Los Angeles County alone accounts for approximately 73,000 of these cases, representing nearly 10 percent of the national total. While individual acts of compassion remain vital, some advocates argue that the church must also address the systemic causes of the crisis.
Drawing on the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10, proponents of housing advocacy suggest that Christians should look beyond immediate relief efforts to address the root causes of displacement. Research indicates that housing costs are a primary predictor of homelessness, accounting for up to 78 percent of regional variations. Consequently, some leaders are calling for the church to support policies that promote housing abundance, viewing the creation of affordable living spaces as a practical expression of neighborly love and a necessary complement to traditional charitable missions.
