Biblical Perspectives on the Sanctity of Human Life

In a recent theological reflection, the author challenges the assertion that the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion. While acknowledging that the Bible does not use modern medical terminology, the author argues that Scripture provides a foundational moral framework regarding the sanctity of unborn human life, similar to how it addresses other contemporary issues like human trafficking or pornography.

Drawing on Genesis 9:5–6, the author emphasizes the divine mandate for human government to protect life, noting that because humans are created in the image of God, the protection of the innocent is a fundamental moral responsibility. Furthermore, the author cites Exodus 21:22–25 as a biblical case law that addresses harm to a pregnant woman and her unborn child, suggesting that the text establishes legal principles regarding the value of life. The author concludes that these passages, alongside the sixth commandment, offer clear moral guidance for society.
