Ligonier Ministries Addresses Theological Views on Human Nature and Sin
Ligonier Ministries has released findings from its latest State of Theology survey in the United Kingdom, highlighting a shift in how evangelicals perceive human nature. The data indicates that 63% of UK evangelicals agree with the statement that people are good by nature despite occasional sin, an increase from 48% in 2018. The organization presents these findings as a point of concern regarding the understanding of the doctrine of total depravity.
Drawing on Genesis 1:26–27 and Romans 3:23, the ministry teaches that humanity was created in God’s image but became corrupted by the fall of Adam. The teaching emphasizes that individuals are not inherently good but are fallen sinners who require the grace of God. According to the ministry, the righteousness of Jesus Christ is the only means by which sinners can be reconciled to God. To address this theological confusion, Ligonier Ministries has provided a digital study guide and additional resources on the doctrine of total depravity for use in group discussions.
