Research Highlights Strategies for Engaging Young Adults in Local Churches
A recent study by Faith Communities Today (FACT), which surveyed over 11,000 congregations, reveals that only 16% of churches maintain significant participation from young adults aged 18 to 34. The data suggests that while larger, growing churches in expanding areas often see higher engagement, smaller congregations can also implement specific practices to foster growth among this demographic.
Researchers identified intentional discipleship as a primary factor, noting that congregations emphasizing prayer and Bible study are twice as likely to attract young adults. The findings suggest that this demographic seeks substantive faith experiences that connect Sunday worship to daily life rather than mere entertainment. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of meaningful relationships, recommending that churches utilize small groups and Sunday school classes to create environments where individuals feel known and supported. The report concludes that effective engagement relies more on fostering community and spiritual vitality than on having large budgets or extensive programming.
