Six Egyptian Christians detained over social media video

Six young Christian men from the Samalout district of Minya, Egypt, remain in state custody following their arrest in early October. Authorities detained the group, whose ages range from 17 to 23, after a TikTok video they posted was accused of mocking Muslim prayer. Prosecutors have charged the men with blasphemy, contempt of religion, and the promotion of extremist ideas.

The video, uploaded on October 4, reportedly mimicked a scene from a 2018 Egyptian comedy film. Although the men removed the content within hours, it had already been reshared, sparking significant backlash and threats of violence against the individuals and their families. In an effort to de-escalate local sectarian tensions, church representatives and family members initially brought five of the men to the police, while the sixth surrendered after his mother was detained by authorities.

Following the incident, local religious leaders and village elders held a reconciliation meeting, during which the Diocese of Samalout issued a formal apology to the Muslim community. Despite these efforts, the men continue to face legal proceedings under the Supreme State Security Prosecution.
