Right To Life UK marks 59th anniversary of Abortion Act
As the United Kingdom marks the 59th anniversary of the Abortion Act receiving Royal Assent, the advocacy group Right To Life UK has estimated that over 11.2 million lives have been lost to abortion since 1967. The organization based this figure on official government data, noting that the most recent full-year statistics from 2023 recorded 278,740 abortions in England and Wales, representing a 10 percent increase from the previous year.
Right To Life UK attributed the rise in part to the permanent implementation of 'pills by post' services, which allow for abortions up to 10 weeks gestation without an in-person medical consultation. The group also expressed concern regarding a recent amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill, which removes legal sanctions for women who perform their own abortions beyond the 24-week limit. Spokesperson Catherine Robinson stated that the current legal framework fails both women and unborn children, arguing that the recent legislative changes could lead to further increases in abortion rates.
