Pro-life leaders urge FDA nominee to reinstate mifepristone safety restrictions

A coalition of 50 pro-life leaders and pastors has issued a formal request to FDA Commissioner nominee Dr. Heidi Overton, urging her to restore previous safety regulations on the abortion drug mifepristone. The group advocates for a return to in-person dispensing requirements, arguing that current policies allowing mail-order and pharmacy distribution lack necessary medical oversight.

The signatories expressed concerns regarding the safety of the drug, citing data that suggests nearly 11% of users experience serious adverse events within 45 days. Furthermore, the coalition argued that remote access complicates the detection of potential coercion or abuse. The letter also highlighted the impact on state-level abortion restrictions, claiming that mail-order distribution undermines laws in approximately 20 states. The group estimates that enforcing these state laws could potentially save over 177,000 lives annually.

This appeal follows a nearly two-year safety review ordered by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The coalition is calling for greater transparency and policy adjustments from the FDA, emphasizing that the current regulatory framework remains too permissive while the agency's review process continues.
