North Carolina Teenagers Charged After Attempted Abortion Leads to Live Birth

An 18-year-old woman and her boyfriend in Durham, North Carolina, are facing multiple criminal charges after the woman gave birth to a premature infant following an attempt to induce an abortion. The couple reportedly obtained mifepristone from an out-of-state source after discovering the pregnancy at 20 weeks, exceeding North Carolina's 12-week legal limit for abortion and the FDA's 10-week guideline for the medication.

Emergency responders were called to the home in late July, where they discovered the five-pound infant in a toilet. The baby, born at 31 weeks gestation, received CPR and survived the incident. The mother faces charges including child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, while the father faces charges of negligent child abuse and inflicting serious bodily injury. Authorities confirmed the couple had acquired the abortion pills illegally from a source in Virginia.
